Summary and Objective: The Volunteer Wheels Paratransit Driver is responsible for driving a paratransit vehicle and assisting disabled, frail and elderly clients on and off the vehicle. Drivers will handle clients in wheelchairs and operate wheelchair lifts and ramps on a daily basis. Due to the nature of our community involvement and clientele, the Volunteer Wheels Paratransit Driver position requires a flexible schedule. Drivers must thrive in a challenging work environment, enjoy making a difference in the lives of senior citizens and persons with disabilities, communicate with integrity and grace while under pressure, and enjoy working within a team culture. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work/Travel: Volunteer Wheels is a seven-day a week operation. The Paratransit Driver position is full-time, five days a week. Schedules may vary. Operations are Monday through Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm; Saturday and Sunday 8:45am - 5:00pm. Travel is not typical for this position. What your day will look like: -- Take pride in making a huge difference in the lives of others -- Drive a 25 foot vehicle to all cities in Sonoma County -- Board clients on/off Paratransit vehicles -- Operate a wheelchair lift -- Use four point securement processes for clients in wheelchairs -- Assist senior citizens and people with disabilities door-to-door -- Regular communication with office dispatching staff -- Being appreciated as critical member of the Volunteer Wheels team What we are looking for in you: -- Over 21 years of age -- Pass a Department of Transportation pre-employment physical and drug test -- Valid Class B or Class C driver's license -- Clean DMV - H6 report and insurable at normal risk rates -- Real desire to work with the general public, senior citizens, persons with disabilities (previous experience a plus) -- Willing to drive 200+ miles per day in company vehicle (previous driving experience a plus) -- Excellent sense of directions and do not get lost easily -- Problem solve on the fly -- Excellent communication -- Basic math skills for fare collection and reconciliation -- Complete paperwork accurately -- Enjoy being a team player. Qualifications: --- High School Diploma/GED required --- Possess a valid State of California Class B or C driver's license (CDL) --- Have an acceptable Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) H-6 report and insurability at normal risk rates --- Thorough knowledge of traffic laws and defensive driving techniques --- Ability to safely drive various vehicles under varying weather conditions --- Willingness to drive up to 200+ miles per day --- Successfully complete a pre-employment Department of Transportation (DOT) drug test and physical --- Ongoing compliance with Department of Transportation FTA required drug screening --- Successfully complete a safety road test administered by center (post-hire) --- Familiarity with geographical area and the ability to read street maps and GPS --- Achieve and maintain CPR and First Aid certification --- Sensitivity and compassion for elderly and physically and/or emotionally disabled individuals --- Ability to use good judgment and work independently --- Flexibility and willingness to work for and with a variety of people --- Experience working with elderly and disabled desired --- Knowledge of HIPAA rules and regulations desired --- Volunteer or community service experience desired Essential Functions: --- Assist passengers on and off vehicles --- Ensure the safety of disabled or frail clients by providing appropriate physical support --- Push, pull and steer large wheelchairs up and down ramps --- Operate wheelchair lifts and properly secure wheelchairs in vehicles --- Accurately record and maintain paperwork --- Communicate using a two-way radio system --- Promptly report vehicle repair needs --- Demonstrate a positive, open and support attitude to clients and co-workers --- Participate in ongoing staff development for Volunteer Wheels personnel --- Attend and participate in regular Volunteer Center all staff meetings Work Environment:
Drivers operate specially equipped Paratransit vehicles to numerous locations in a variety of road and weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to wet, humid, and dry conditions, fumes, airborne particles, and other caustic chemicals, vibrations, loud noises and other conditions times per day. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to push wheelchair bound clients up and down ramps, and to assist and support disabled and frail clients is required.
