Overview

As a Principal Manufacturing Engineer, you are expected to provide support to manufacturing for products in production. You will work cross functionally with design engineering to help resolve issues, quality engineering as part of MRB to support disposition of non-conformances, operators to help solve issues and identify process improvement opportunities, program management on scope and budget of your support, planner/buyers/suppliers to resolve part issues, and peers for review of proposed process and tooling changes.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise your role in providing a safe working environment for assembly and test
  • Support Non-conformance (NC) Material Review Board (MRB)
  • Provide input for NC material disposition, root cause and corrective action (RCCA)

Provide design input for, and peer review of, production tooling and test equipment

  • Instill a culture of problem identification and solving among production staff
  • Collaborate with design engineer(s) to develop assembly/test work instructions (WI)
  • Ensure WI's meet manufacturing baseline strategies and customer requirements
  • Interface with design engineer(s) and suppliers to provide solutions to technical problems in manufacturing
  • Peer review and/or lead designs for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA) efforts
  • Present manufacturing status to customers and management
  • Support failure analyses using tools such as 5 Whys, Ishikawa (Fishbone) diagrams and fault trees
  • Provide labor & material estimates for monthly program status and proposal efforts
  • Manage improvement projects and perform Return on Investment (ROI) analyses
  • Derive Takt times from cycle times and internal requirements provided by PMO
  • Conduct and document DFM and DFA trades during product design process
  • Perform Material and Information (M&I) charts
  • Lead and/or participate in Kaizen events as part of continuous improvement
  • Coordinate and approve transition of Special Test Equipment (STE) to manufacturing
  • Conduct and document Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gage R&R) studies
  • Lead Process Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (PFMECA)
  • Ability to obtain DoD Secret Clearance

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances (GD&T)
  • Understanding of lean principles
  • Just-in-Time (JIT)
  • Kaizen / Continuous Improvement
  • 8 Step Problem Solving
  • 5 S
  • Material and Information Flow (M&I) or Value Stream Mapping (VSM) - M&I preferred

  • Understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC) principles and practice, to include
  • SPC run charts
  • Standard Deviation
  • Process Capability Indices (Cpk / Cp)
  • Performance Capability Indices (Ppk / Pp)
  • Control and Spec limits

  • Familiarity with PFMECA
  • Familiarity with Gauge R&R principles and practice
  • Familiarity with all applicable assembly and test processes
  • Familiarity with all applicable outside part fabrication, finishing and assembly processes

Education and/or Experience

  • BS Engineering - Mechanical, Manufacturing or Industrial recommended
  • 12+ years of experience
  • Experience with MS Office tools
  • Experience with Lean manufacturing principles and implementation
