Job Description:

We are looking for an Associate Coder (Temporary Position) with the AMG Doyle Park Cardiology Department at St. Joseph Heritage Healthcare.

Location: Santa Rosa, CA

Schedule: Full Time - 80 biweekly hours

Shift: 8-hour, Days

Job Summary:

To maximize reimbursement and minimize denials by assuring that proper coding guidelines have been met.

Essential Functions:

  • Audit and process into the billing system all daily encounters by verifying that all pertinent demographic information as well as ICD-9 and CPT codes have been provided for accurate billing.
  • Verify and connect appropriate diagnosis codes to each CPT code subject to Medicare's Local Medical Review Policies or National Coverage Determinations for all Medicare patients.
  • Code all office and hospital encounters. Verify in billing system for the 90 day global charges and batch encounters for the charge entry auditor.
  • Investigate all "rejected" encounter forms that are lacking vital information such as diagnoses, referring physician, date of service, etc., by utilizing the medical record and billing system or any other means so that the encounter form may be processed or sent back to the physician for further information to ensure timely filing.
  • Responsible for follow up and tracking on all outstanding encounters and assigned physician tasks.
  • Assist Coder with missing or denied ICD9 by abstracting clinical data from patient medical record.
  • Answer coding questions and assist coder in chart audits.
  • Report any discrepancies to immediate supervisor.

Skills:

  • Standard electronic billing format for medical billing and Microsoft Office knowledge.
  • Demonstrate organizational abilities.
  • Demonstrate dependability.
  • Requires good written and verbal communications skills to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Must be able to work under general supervision.
  • Must have a professional and mature demeanor.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced department and handle multiple tasks, work with interruptions, and deal effectively with confidential information.
  • Strong telephone etiquette.
  • Ability to comprehend CRT screens and proficiency with MS Office software.
  • Requires good written and verbal communications skills to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Must have excellent presentation and oral communication skills.
  • 10 key adding machine.
  • Ability to understand Insurance Remittances and EOB's.
  • Ability to comprehend CRT screens and proficiency with MS Office software, preferred.

Position Requirements:

Education: H.S. Diploma or GED

Experience:

  • 2 years Coding knowledge (CPT/ICD9/HCPCS), medical terminology and data entry work experience.
  • Excellent problem resolution experience
  • Experience in ambulatory or acute care professional coding (CPT, ICD-9, HCPC).
  • Experience with chart auditing.
  • PC/CRT experience.
  • Experience in an Ambulatory Medical Office or Acute Care Facility.

  • Allscripts or ECW experience
