We are looking for a Laboratory Assistant for the Laboratory HH
Department at NorCal HealthConnect.
Location: Healdsburg, CA
Work Schedule: Full time - 80 Biweekly hours
Shift: 8 hour, Days (Variable)
Perform venipuncture and micro collection technique on patients.
Functions include appropriately identifying, labeling and
processing all samples. The Lab Assistant will comply with all
requirements as defined by the laws and regulations relating to
Clinical Laboratories from the state of California Business and
Professional Code and the California Code of Regulation. Punctual
and predictable attendance is a requirement of this position.
* Performs venipuncture and micro collection techniques to
obtain appropriate samples for laboratory testing. Prioritizes
workload as necessary. * Standard: * Blood is accurately drawn
without injury to the patient. * Uses aseptic techniques when
performing venipuncture or micro collection techniques on patients
in both healthy and comprised situations. * Collection of blood
includes blood cultures, which are done using stringent collection
criteria to avoid needle stick injury and contamination when
inoculation the specimen into the blood culture bottles. * Standard
precautions are consistently practiced and personal protective
equipment is consistently used where appropriate. * Life
threatening emergency situations is responded to appropriately
according to policy and procedure.
* Properly identifies patients according to laboratory
guidelines. Properly and accurately labels all specimens. *
Standard: * When drawing patients, checks patient's identification
(armband, ID card) against orders reviewing name, date of birth,
account number, and medical record number. Labels each tube
correctly with initial, date, and time and next to the patient.
* Understands the specimen requirements for each test ordered
before drawing a patient. * Standard: * Each specimen is accurately
collected. * Specimen container references are checked to verify
type of tube needed. If information is not available in the

a friendly and cordial manner, in person or on the telephone, thus

* Maintains strictest confidence as required under HIPAA for all
patient Protected Health Information (PHI). All PHI is protected
from accidental or intentional, inappropriate disclosure one
hundred percent (100%) of the time. * Standard: * Reviews patient
information in a secure location that limits access to patient
charts/information to those with a need to know. * When discussion
is necessary uses only as much patient information as is necessary
to provide appropriate care within the full scope of this role. *
Does not disclose, divulge, or discuss any PHI information not
directly related to providing patient care and education with
anyone. * Takes all necessary physical precautions to secure
patient information including but not limited to securing charts,
paperwork when leaving work station, continuously using hospital
computer security precautions, limiting discussion when
unauthorized personnel or public are present.
* Inventories and stocks phlebotomy supplies in supply area at
work station. * Standard: * Supply inventory is sufficient to
support 2 weeks of normal operations. * Collection kits for urine
and microbiology specimens are stocked for facility collection.
* Checks pending list for the general laboratory sections at
least three times a shift and reviews any outstanding orders
immediately with technologist and/or lead processor. * Standard: *
Pending lists are to be pulled and reviewed at least at the
beginning, middle, and end of shift by the technologist or
assistant working in the sections. * Any outstanding requests are
to be completed immediately or cause for pending explained and so
noted in the communication log.
* Prepares specimens for testing by centrifugation when
necessary and notifies technologist of any stats or specimens with
special instructions. * Standard: * The centrifuge is operated at
proper setting for the various specimen requirements and serum and
plasma is aliquotted into appropriate tubes according to procedure.
* Aliquotted tubes are stored at the correct temperature. * Send
outs are prepared for courier distribution at the specified times
designated by the referral laboratory.
* Stroke Program: Takes an active role in job specific stroke
education and training. * Performs other duties as assigned to
support the department's objectives. * Standard: * Performance to
be evaluated in terms of: * Cooperation. * Accuracy. * Adherence to
instructions. * Completed within designated time lines.
* Attention to detail. * Strong communication skills (written
and verbal). * Works effectively with others. * Ability to
anticipate, recognize and meet the needs of patients. * Demonstrate
excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Minimum Position Qualifications:
Education: H.S. Diploma or GED or equivalent educ/experience
License/Certification: Valid CA Phlebotomy Technician I
Preferred Position Qualifications:
Education: Associate's Degree with some science classes.
* 6 months as Data entry/computer experience. * Experience in a
laboratory setting; hospital preferred.
