Summary

This Dental Assistant position is part of the Dental Service at the Santa Rosa Community Based Outpatient Clinic(CBOC). As a dental assistant you will perform the full range of duties and assists both staff dentists and residents in all aspects of patient care, as it relates to dental services.

Responsibilities

Dental Assistant GS-3

A Dental Assistant at this level serves in a career development position with direct supervision and will assist dentists in many aspects of direct patient care, clinical and clerical functions.

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Customer Service

Shows courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude toward patients, co-workers and the public;

Provides assistance to customers with questions or concerns, and provides service recovery.

Chairside Assisting

Properly prepares operatories for planned dental procedures;

Passes instruments to the dentist in a proper, safe, and efficient manner;

Keeps oral operative field clear of debris and retracts oral tissues effectively and comfortably;

Prepares and mixes dental materials per manufacturer's instructions;

Properly cleans, disinfects, maintains and stocks operatories;

Assists in general and specialty dental procedures.

Dental Imaging

Images are characterized by good diagnostic quality;

Utilizes dental imaging safety techniques , and retakes are minimized.

Infection Control and Instrument Sterilization

Follows proper infection control procedures at all times while performing duties;

Prepares instruments and equipment properly and in a timely fashion for sterilization by SPD.

Clerical Functions

Schedules patient appointments;

Assists dentist in charting findings and treatment plans in patient records.

Patient Safety

Modifies care as necessitated by patient's age and abilities (patient transfer and position);

Provides accurate and understandable instructions to patients;

Participates in patient identification and time out procedures;

Monitors patient condition during treatment, being alert for signs of physical distress.

Employee Education

Complies with Employee Education requirements and completes mandatory annual safety training.

Dental Laboratory Functions

Pours impressions and prepares study models;

Performs other dental laboratory functions.

Dental Assistant GS-4

A Dental Assistant at this level performs all the duties of a GS-3 Dental Assistant as stated above. This level is developmental and the assistant will provide assistance to dentists in many aspects of direct patient care, clinical and clerical functions. At this level the assistant is a trained and competent chairside assistant but will require guidance from the more experienced staff members for complex patient care issues.

Dental Assistant GS-5

A Dental Assistant at this level performs all the duties of a GS-3 and GS-4 Dental Assistant as stated above and the duties stated below. A staff dental assistant will assist with routine dental procedures. Direct supervision is provided for any complex patient care procedures from more experienced dental assistants and/or the treating dentist. An employee at the GS-5 level is trained, experienced and thoroughly familiar with Dental Service policies and procedures and will assist dentists in many aspects of direct patient care, clinical and clerical functions.

Additional Duties:

Using the concepts of 4-handed dentistry.

Patient Safety

Responds to basic medical emergencies.

Dental Assistant GS-6

A Staff Dental Assistant at this level is at the full performance level and will perform the full range of duties stated above and below. Indirect supervision is provided by a lead dental assistant, dental assistant supervisor or treating dentist. Assistance is provided to staff dentists in many aspects of patient care, clinical and clerical functions.

Additional Duties:

Chairside Assisting

Using the concepts of 4-handed dentistry;

Assists in specialty dental procedures related to the specialty dental fields of oral and maxillofacial surgery, endodontics, prosthodontics, and periodontics. Procedures include but are not limited to the following: implant surgery, bone grafting, treatment of fractures, tori removal, alveoloplasty, surgical extraction, biopsy, gingivectomy, periodontal surgery, molar and surgical endodontics, specialty prosthetic appliances.

Dental Imaging

Images are obtained within the desired time frame.

Clerical Functions

Is cross-trained in order to be able to perform essential front office duties;

Assists in filling gaps in dentists' schedules due to cancellations and failed appointments.

Patient Safety

Responds to basic medical emergencies.

Direct Patient Care

Takes impressions for diagnostic casts;

Coronal polishing of teeth;

Places rubber dams and matrix bands;

Removes sutures and periodontal surgical dressing;

Provides post operative and other patient education.

Work Schedule:

Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Experience and Education:

  • Experience. Six months experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work, or provides familiarity with the work. OR,
  • Education. Successful completion of a 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). OR,
  • Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying.

Certification. Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.

  • Provisions for Certification of Radiologic Competence
  • Successful completion of the Dental Radiation Health and Safety Examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc.; OR,
  • Successful completion of the Principles and Practice of Dental Radiology and Radiographic Safety courses and examinations developed by the Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Dentistry. OR,
  • Successful completion of a radiation health and safety program or examination approved by a state board of dentistry or the Department of Defense (DoD).
  • Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for certification of radiologic competence may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate dental assistant under the authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405(a)(1)(D). Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This [will result in removal from the GS-681 series and] may result in termination of employment.

Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including certification for positions above the full performance level that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply:

  • Employees may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance, journey level, or changed to lower grade within the occupation, but may not be promoted beyond the journey level or placed in supervisory or managerial positions. Employees MUST meet the certification requirement before they can be promoted to those higher grade levels.
  • Employees who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis, until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard.
  • Employees initially grandfathered into this occupation, who subsequently obtain additional education and/or licensure/certification/registration that meet all the basic requirements of this qualification standard must maintain the required credentials as a condition of employment in the occupation.
  • If an employee who was retained under this provision leaves the occupation, the employee loses protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry to the occupation.

Physical Requirements. A pre-employment physical is required.Physical requirements include the ability to lift and carry 15 pounds or less; Reach above shoulders; Use both hands and fingers; Use legs; Walk, stand, kneel and bend up to 8 hours/day; Rapid and simultaneous mental and muscular response; see with both eyes(correctable vision); distinguish shades of colors; hear(hearing aid).

English Language Proficiency. Dental assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Policy.

Preferred Experience/Certification: CDA Certified Dental Assistant; OMFS experience andbasic life support.

Grade Determinations:

GS-3 Dental Assistant

  • Experience or Education. None beyond the basic requirements.
  • *1 Assignment. Refer to Additional Information.

GS-4 Dental Assistant

  • Experience or Education. In addition to the basic requirements, 1 year of experience at the next lower level, OR 2 years of education above high school that included completion of a dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Basic knowledge of infection control and safe instrument handling.
  • Basic knowledge of dental procedures and medical emergencies.
  • Ability to perform basic radiographic image capture and processing/retrieval.
  • Basic knowledge of maintenance, care and storage of dental equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of patient privacy requirements.
  • *2 Assignment. Refer to Additional Information.

GS-5 Dental Assistant

  • Experience or Education. In addition to the requirements listed at GS-4 above, applicants must demonstrate at least 1 year of experience equivalent to at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level. OR, Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study that included or was supplemented by completion of a dental assistant program by CODA. AND the applicant must demonstrate the following KSA's:
  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of anatomy and ability to evaluate diagnostic quality.
  • Broad knowledge of common medical emergencies and vital signs measurement
  • Basic knowledge of instruments, materials and standardized dental procedures.
  • Ability to learn and utilize software programs used within VHA.
  • Basic communication skills to provide patient instructions according to established protocol.
  • *3 Assignment. Refer to Additional Information.

GS-6 Staff Dental Assistant (Full Performance Level)

  • Experience. At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, GS-5, that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs:
  • Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to identify normal oral anatomy.
  • Advanced knowledge of instruments, materials, and standardized dental procedures used in all phases of restorative, surgical, endodontic and periodontal care and procedures.
  • Ability to monitor and perform basic interpretation of vital signs.
  • Ability to independently provide procedure-specific patient education and appropriate referral of patient concerns to treating dentist.
  • Ability to capture standard and special dental images of good diagnostic quality in traditional or digital formats.
  • Ability to perform maintenance on dental equipment used for routine and specialty dentistry.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve data utilizing electronic dental records.
  • Ability to perform dental assistant-appropriate laboratory procedures.
