Certification Must-Have: Strong in emergency situations and ability
to work independently Description: The unit consists of 4 labor and
delivery beds and 8 mother-baby beds. Nurse-to-patient ratios are
1:2 during labor and delivery and 1:4 for postpartum couplet care.
The unit manages an average of 45 deliveries per month and handles
standard labor and delivery cases, including term and preterm
deliveries. No high-risk cases are managed on the unit. Mothers who
are 34 weeks and below are transferred to another facility.
Newborns may receive IV antibiotics and/or short-term oxygen
therapy as needed. General gynecological patients are also
admitted. There are 2 RNs and 1 respiratory therapist present
during every delivery. Weekend shifts include every other weekend,
with specific shifts scheduled on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
nights. Holidays will be rotated with core staff, and holiday time
off will be considered but is not guaranteed. The only charting
system utilized is Cerner. There is no floating to other units.
Shifts are scheduled 6 weeks in advance, with no self-scheduling
available. Report is conducted at the bedside during shifts. The
department is staffed with anesthesia and OB on-call during the
night, while a hospitalist or intensivist is available during the
day. The unit has continuous respiratory therapy services but does
not have a dedicated pharmacy on-site during all hours. Pharmacy
services are available during specific hours and through on-call
pharmacists. There is a strong emphasis on emergency preparedness
in this role.
