Position Overview:
The Nurse Manager is responsible for the human, financial and capital resources as well as for all nursing care performed in the department. Responsibilities for the department include: develops and implements quality process improvement activities, interviews, hires, evaluates, coaches and disciplines staff in collaboration with the department director; oversees staff professional growth and development and manages capital and operational budgets within expected goals. The Nurse Manager is clinically competent and able to provide indirect and direct patient care as needed depending on patient care demand and to ensure patient safety. Leads the improvement of the patient experience ensuring active involvement of patient, family members, significant others in the care planning process. The Nurse Manager ensures adequate, effective and efficient staffing plan for the nursing unit according to CA BRN ratio laws and applicable Title 22 patient classification system requirements. This position functions as a liaison between patients, physicians, staff and administration. The Nurse Manager is knowledgeable of all state and federal regulatory requirements. The Nursing Manager directs the management and clinical activities of the Department ensuring high quality, cost-effective care is provided throughout the hospital after normal duty hours. The Nurse Manager provides leadership and management support in planning, organizing, staffing and controlling the operational functions related to Department. This role also consults with the Chief Administrative Officer, Chief Nursing Executive, Senior Management Team Department Nursing Managers, and medical staff on activities related to staffing, safety, quality improvement and risk management after normal duty hours. Recommends changes in policy, programs and physical resources required to achieve 24/7 hospital objectives. Ensures that the nursing and professional staff is competent and sufficient to provide direct and indirect patient care and clinical services to the patient population of these units. May perform staff RN duties if necessary. The Nursing Manager can oversee and may be responsible to ensure the Nursing Supervisors represented in administration, directs facility operations, and supervises personnel in all departments when leadership/management staff is not present in the facility. The role is also a resource person for decision-making concerning patient care services, emergency response, non-clinical services and ensures that hospital policies and procedures are properly interpreted and applied.



Qualifications:
Education: HS Diploma required. Graduated from an accredited school of nursing required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing or in process required or equivalent education/experience.
Licenses/Certifications:

  • CA RN license required
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS required upon hire
  • Nationally recognized certification in specialty areas is desireable. If national certification is not present or current, it should be obtained within 18 months of hire.
  • Ability to earn LEAN certification desirableExperience:
    • Minimum of three years experience in acute nursing care, at least two years of experience in the specialty area they manage.
    • Background in nursing leadership as a Charge Nurse or Clinical Coordinator is required
    • Management experience expected. Ability to function in Nursing Supervisor role.Skills & Knowledge:
      • Advanced knowledge of Clinical nursing in department of responsibility.
      • Knowledge of management theory including budget development, monitoring, quality personnel management, communications, managerial presentation and customer service.
      • Computer/data entry/statistical evaluation skills are desirable, experience with electronic health record is also desirable.
      • Certain departments require additional special skills.
      • Demonstrates the ability to lead employees effectively.
      • Presents oneself as role model for departmental staff, demonstrating professionalism and encouraging staff growth and development.
      • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized, and completes required responsibilities in the designated time frame.
      • Interacts professionally with patients, families, and others, treating them with respect and dignity.
      • Is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of performance improvement indicators to improve patient outcomes and work environment.
      • Shows proficiency in all areas of the Skills Checklist and completes ongoing education pertinent to self-growth and development.
      • Must demonstrate knowledge of the departmental billing process and ensure reimbursements are accurate.
