Job Description:

Adult & Aging Social Worker IVs provide a full range of social services to protect older and dependent adults from neglect, abuse, or exploitation; and provide case management services for elders and adults with disabilities who need support to stay safely in the community. These positions have responsibility for an assigned caseload of clients, which require extensive training and experience in case management and in the development of risk assessments, service plans, and community resources. Ideal candidates will possess: A Master's Degree in Social Work, Gerontology, or a related field Experience working with frail, low income, elderly populations, and people with disabilities Community care coordination, mental health, and counseling experience Previous experience conducting home visits with older adults and people with disabilities Bilingual (English/Spanish) speaking abilities Adult Protective Services (APS) A&A Social Worker IVs assigned to this unit work in a fast paced, dynamic environment that requires a high tolerance for changing priorities in workload and exposure to traumatic situations in the community. These positions may be assigned to work from the Santa Rosa or Petaluma offices, in either the Intake or the Investigations units. Currently, vacancies are available in the Investigations unit only. Current funding is in place for the APS Time Limited position through September 30, 2020 and is anticipated to continue through 2021. Duties may include: Intake Receiving reports of suspected elder and dependent abuse, neglect or self-neglect through the intake process Conducting interviews and providing crisis counseling with reporting parties to collect detailed information; providing information and referrals Cross reporting to law enforcement and assisting with determining response based on jurisdiction and risk; collaborating with other professional disciplines to intervene in cases of abuse and neglect Investigation Investigating suspected incidents of elder and dependent adult abuse, neglect, or self-neglect Conducting home visits, risk assessments, creating person-centered service plans, and documenting case details within required time frames Working collaboratively with community partners, such as law enforcement, the District Attorney, hospitals, and other social services agencies The Adult and Aging Division The Adult and Aging Division (A&A) assists and advocates for the safety, health, dignity, and independence of older adults and persons with disabilities. A&A focuses on protective, supportive social services, as well as community advocacy and coordination. The Division includes the Sonoma County Area Agency on Aging program, and its Advisory Council, which plan, coordinate, and allocate Older American Act funds for services for persons 60 years of age and older in Sonoma County. For additional information about the A&A, please visit our website. EXTRA-HELP EMPLOYMENT Extra-help employees relieve or augment permanent staff. Temporary, extra-help employees are not in the classified civil service and do not have property rights to permanently allocated positions. In addition, they do not receive most employee benefits such as: long-term disability insurance coverage; accrual of vacation; participation in the County retirement program; or eligibility to take promotional examinations. Temporary, extra-help employees are limited in their employment to a maximum of one calendar year. These employees must be off of work for three months before they can be re-employed on an extra help basis. Extra-help employees who meet the eligibility requirements may qualify for a County contribution toward medical coverage. *Salary is negotiable within the established range. The Civil Service title for these positions is Social Service Worker IV. Normally, this includes a Master's Degree in social work, or a Master's Degree from a two-year counseling program; OR Graduation from college, with a degree in social Work, sociology, psychology or other behavioral science; and five years of progressively responsible experience in a public welfare agency, two of which were at the level of Social Service Worker III would provide such opportunity OR Academic coursework at a college or university in social work, psychology, sociology, and other behavior sciences; and six years of progressively responsible experience in a social work agency, at least three of which were at a level of Social Service Worker III would provide such opportunity. License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of: the principles and application of psychology of individual and group behavior, community services, and social work methods; social casework goals, principles and methods; the intent and appropriate application of laws, rules, regulations, policies governing operation of public social service agencies; physical and mental illness and their impact on personality. Working knowledge of: problem solving and counseling techniques. Considerable knowledge of: socioeconomic factors, which promote stable family life and elements which affect daily stability.
